Wing Memorial Hospital

Wing Memorial Hospital, located in Central New England, treats the residents of five communities in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. Wing needed a major expansion in order to serve the need for increased patient loads.  RDK was brought onto the design team by Payette and the challenge was to provide a unique design to include the predetermined number of approved inpatient beds.  The team essentially built a new hospital attached to the existing building in order to fill this need.  This allowed the hospital to use the old space for future outpatient procedures as well as a cafeteria.

The expansion included a new two-story main entrance, three new, state-of-the-art operating rooms, PACU, ENDO, CSR, and six intensive care rooms.  RDK designed and upgraded all the MEP/FP systems for patient care, medical procedures and the clinical labs.  Since maintaining a certain relative humidity in operating rooms is essential, RDK recommended a desiccant wheel in the Air Handling System in order to insure there was minimal to no moisture expelled during surgeries.  This also provided an energy-saving measure since regulating temperatures in hospitals can be very costly.
