MBTA Charles Street / MGH Redline Station by RDK Engineers

MBTA Charles Street/ MGH Redline Station

The MBTA’s Charles/MGH Station is seen by many as a gateway to Boston. The 1930’s era facility was facing a number of issues related to age, not the least of which was its elevated platform which made accessibility for disabled commuters next to impossible. From the project inception, the design team was committed to modernizing the facility in a way that would dramatically improve the overall transportation experience for commuters and pedestrians alike.

Teaming with HDR and Elkus Manfredi Architects, RDK provided MEP design that included improvements to the accessible route from the Red Line to the Station, the barrier-free access to and from the station and adjacent neighborhoods, hospitals, the Esplanade, and heavy traffic areas around the station.  Improvements included the addition of ramps, elevators, new signage, and inclusion of detectable warnings along the platforms and a safe accessible path of travel.

RDK’s involvement on this project also involved a user friendly design, phased work so as not to disrupt normal service, and heating and ventilation systems design to provide proper levels of tempered ventilation throughout the entire station and comfortable temperature levels in all the spaces.
