Nuvera Fuel Cells World Headquarters by RDK Engineers

Nuvera Fuel Cells World Headquarters

The rapid growth of Nuvera Fuel Cells, a world-leader in the development of fuel cell technology and alternative energy, necessitated relocation of the firm’s world headquarters to significantly larger facilities to accommodate their expanding operations and increase in staff.

RDK served as MEP/FP engineer on the Team led by Margulies Perruzzi Architects, responsible for designing a state-of-the-art R&D/manufacturing facility for Nuvera, that includes 25 R&D labs, 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space, administrative offices, numerous collaboration rooms for impromptu meetings (“scribble rooms”), training rooms and a cafeteria.

The R&D and manufacturing operations conducted at the reconfigured facility require the use of up to 25 gases and liquids, a number of which are extremely flammable. RDK designed process piping systems for delivery of these gases and liquids from outside fuel storage bunkers and hydrogen generation systems to the new labs and manufacturing areas. RDK also designed enhancements to Nuvera’s lab safety systems, including new flow-limiting devices on fuel supply lines to all labs, as well as automatic shut-off valves tied into flammable gas detection systems within each lab room. Custom ventilation systems were also designed by RDK for each lab to prevent build-up of flammable gases in the event of a leak. Layout of the critical systems was carefully considered to ensure flexibility for ease of interchange that projects could be conducted in any of the multiple labs.
