Amgen Energy Conservation and Tissue Culture Lab

The goal of this project was to implement relatively simple energy conservation measure
(ECM) design initiatives involving the reduction of airflow rates throughout the building in-
cluding a non-chemistry laboratory, conference rooms, and office spaces.  The building is
served by 100% out-side air and air handling units which currently run 24/7 providing con-
ditioned air to all spaces.

RDK’s design upgrades resulted in total energy savings of approximately 2.5 million gallons
of water annually (the equivalent of 127 swimming pools), and reduced carbon emissions
generated at the electric utility by approximately 2,500 metric tons (the equivalent 477 vehicles
removed from the road).

In order to accommodate their rapid and continued growth, Amgen Inc., needed to upgrade
their Kendall Square facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts.   RDK provided design services
for the fit-out of 80,000 square feet of empty shell space into new chemistry and tissue culture
lab. RDK converted and expanded the base building systems to accommodate new lab space
including BL-2 level design, dedicated VAV hood exhaust, and new dedicated supply air systems.
The project was designed to meet LEED certification.

RDK worked closely with the Kling Stubbins Architects and the client in an effort to ensure that
the continuously-conditioned climate necessary for the laboratory was maintained during periodic
suspensions of operating systems.
