RDK's Carolinas HealthCare System CMC Pineville Energy Plant Project Wins 2016 ASHE Vista Infrastructure Award!

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Square feet: 22,000 energy plant
Number of beds: 206

Carolinas Medical Center Pineville expanded over the last 10 years to accommodate population growth in the Charlotte area, but the central plant in the middle of the campus was undersized to support the additional square footage. However, because of the central location of the plant, it could not be expanded, so the design team led by RDK Engineers, created a plan to replace the plant in the back of the campus.

The design of the new plant allows for future expansion without interrupting service. Both ends of the plant can be expanded to allow additional chillers, boilers, or generators, and the electrical system was designed to accommodate additional loads in the future.

"We had multiple projects, project managers, and design firms all working on the campus at the same time. It’s like building a big puzzle, and you have the pieces that you have, and other teams have their pieces, and at the end of the day, everything has to work together."
