Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Griffin Academic CenterThis striking six-story, 49,700 square foot triangle-shaped building, located on the edge of Boston, houses a variety of teaching and administrative facilities including a 230-seat auditorium to house the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The complex design of the building proposed many challenges for the Perkins + Will/RDK team which made coordination on the project a major focus. For example, the building had two stories below grade (one including the auditorium) begin construction before the above-ground design was complete. Trying to fit MEP equipment (which is all square in nature) into the triangular building was also quite challenging. The people of the Mission Hill community had a significant voice in this project. We had to remember that this building was being built in someone’s neighborhood. There were noise and height restrictions by which we had to abide. The generator on the roof was designed and installed in a sound proof enclosure in order to satisfy the City and neighborhood’s noise ordinance. The height limitations meant that all of our MEP equipment had to be kept below a certain point on the roof and also could not interfere with the picturesque view of the Boston Skyline. |
