RDK Engineers of NC, as PWI Consulting Engineers – SE, was retained by Palmetto Health to provide complete MEP design and construction services for their new 150,000 state-of-the-art SF Heart & Vascular Center, as well as for a new Power Plant to serve the complex.
The Heart Center addition required 5 new custom AHU’s totaling 114,000 cfm. Two 600 ton centrifugal chillers, cooling towers and pumps were installed at the new energy plant. New steam piping was routed from the existing plant to the new plant, and chilled water and steam then distributed to the new addition. Plumbing and med gas systems include steam fired instantaneous water heaters, recirculation pumps, central vacuum system, and medical air compressor all centrally located in the new energy plant.
The cardiac facility’s electrical system required a separate primary service from the utility company along with a 2,250 kw stand-by emergency generator located in the energy center. RDK Engineers of NC also designed fire alarm, paging, nurse call and lighting systems for the project.
