Parker Science Building, Illinois College
Jacksonville, IL

RDK designed the HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for the new 46,000 SF Parker Science Building at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. The new facility, which houses the College's Biology, Chemistry and Physics Departments, contains multiple teaching and research laboratories and computer compatible classrooms. Special features of the state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary science center include a museum of plant and animal specimens; a laser light laboratory; a climate controlled greenhouse on the roof which can simulate tropical, arid, and temperate conditions; and a revolving dome observatory. Because the building was constructed adjacent to the President's House, noise levels from cooling towers to be located on roof was a concern. RDK evaluated alternatives and selected equipment that met the acoustical consultant's stringent criteria. RDK coordinated closely with the project architect to design building systems which met the facility's aesthetic as well as technical requirements within the many equipment installation constraints.
