RDK Engineers NC, as PWI Consulting Engineers-Southeast, provided full MEP/FP design and construction support services for a new 47,000 SF, 2-story Surgical Addition to Rex Healthcare’s nearly 1 million SF main campus hospital in Raleigh, NC. The addition contains 12 new universal design OR spaces with cutting-edge features such as optional green filtered lighting to reduce monitor glare; anesthesia workroom; central sterile storage; and support areas. Work also involved renovation of 34,300 SF of existing space in the hospital for new PACU areas.
Significant infrastructure upgrades were required to support the addition and renovations, including expansion of the existing chiller plant building to accommodate addition of a new 1250 ton centrifugal chiller and expansion of the existing boiler room to accommodate a new 600 BHP 4–pass, wetback, dual fuel high-pressure steam boiler.
Work was completed in three phases to allow the hospital to remain fully-occupied 24/7 during construction.
