Holyoke Hospital Expansion
Holyoke, MA
Holyoke Hospital, designed in 1953 to handle 60-80 patients a day,  now averages 600-800. Space limitations and aging building systems made it increasingly difficult for the hospital to efficiently provide the services required by the community.

RDK designed MEP/FP systems for construction of a new 28,000 SF addition and extensive upgrades to the existing facility, to transform the hospital into a modern regional healthcare center. The addition includes three new operating suites, endoscopy suites, a cardiac catheterization suite, and a new PACU. Two existing operating rooms were combined and renovated to house the sizable cardiac catheterization apparatus required for modern surgical procedures. Renovations included the phlebotomy, cardiology, anesthesiology, medical records and patient registration departments, as well as physician's lounge. Integration of new MEP/FP systems with existing utilities was particularly complex, requiring careful planning and programming. New systems installed included a new emergency power generator and distribution system to support the hospital's expanded critical power requirements; a new dedicated 250 ton chiller plant and air handling systems; and new medical vacuum and CO2 systems to support special procedures in the surgical suites.
