RDK Engineers of NC, as PWI Consulting Engineers – SE, designed MEP systems for core and shell and tenant fit-up of Holston Medical Group’s new 250,000 SF, six-story medical office building in Kingsport, Tennessee. The MOB contains an extensive range of healthcare clinics and facilities including Physical Therapy, Occupational Medicine, Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery, OB/GYN, Pharmacy, Urgent Care, Laboratory, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Endocrinology, Disease Management, Clinical Research, Gastroenterology, Ear/Nose/Throat, Orthopedics, and General Surgery. Also included are a state-of-the-art conference center, a branch bank and a full kitchen/restaurant.
The focal point of building is its full-height glass façade and three-story atrium, which required careful analysis and specialized HVAC and lighting designs. The HVAC system for heating and cooling the atrium, for example, used underground air distribution ductwork and took into account the orientation and glass exposure for the cooling and heating seasons.
Work also included design of a medical gas distribution system for one clinic and for future conversion of the building to an ambulatory surgery center.
