Since 2000, RDK has designed building systems for nearly 100 specialized R&D facilities for the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and for the Broad Institute with which, together with Harvard and MIT, it is affiliated. Whitehead is one of the world's leading biological research and educational institutions. Together with Broad, the Institute runs pioneering programs in areas such as cancer and stem cell research, and has played a leadership role in advancing the fields of genomics and genetics.
Projects completed by RDK at the Institutes, which total thousands of SF in several buildings, have involved numerous wet & dry laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, as well as plant rooms and animal facilities. Because of the nature of the research conducted in these facilities, many of them are BL-2 or BL-3 rated. Whitehead's and Broad's research is constantly at the forefront of scientific inquiry, necessitating frequent reconfiguration of space and addition of new equipment, so building systems are designed by RDK with the flexibility to accommodate these rapid changes.
