University of Massachusetts Hotel at the Campus CenterOriginally built in 1970 with no renovations since, the University of Massachusetts recognized the need to transform the hotel in the heart of the campus into a three-star facility. The 116-room hotel used by parents, alumni, students, and faculty was completely modernized by the Gensler/RDK Team, making it a place guests want to stay not just because of its location but because of its amenities. RDK assisted in the renovation by designing new lighting, power, and audio visual components for wall-mounted plasma televisions, high speed internet access, laptop plug-ins, iPod docking stations, and a secure passcard entry system to accommodate our ever-growing need for power. In addition, RDK’s involvement in the project included replacement of windows, vertical hot and chilled water risers and horizontal piping to new fan coil units that save energy, and upgrades to all bathrooms including the replacement of bathtubs with walk-in glass showers. The project team worked with UMass Amherst to complete the renovations two floors at a time. This way, the hotel was able to operate during the construction which was completed in a little under a year’s time. |
