Mandarin Oriental Design and Commissioning by RDK Engineers

Mandarin Oriental Design and Commissioning

The new $260 million, 450,000 square foot mixed-use complex located in Boston’s historic Back Bay includes the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, ultra-luxury condominiums, apartments, spa, fitness center, and high-end retail facilities.

The CBT Architects/RDK project team had to work through challenges including the narrow site, height limitations imposed by the city of Boston, and making sure to comply with Mandarin Oriental's standards all while investigating systems that could be seamlessly integrated into the luxurious interiors and roof gardens. RDK Engineers, who performed design and commissioning services, selected metering and separate systems for the hotel including a unique Direct Digital Control (DDC) system integrated with the hotel’s scheduling system. RDK also installed a Trigen high-pressure steam system to eliminate the need for high-pressure boilers which are less efficient and produce more nitrogen oxide. The infrastructure for the condominiums was designed so that owners could select any MEP system they want when finishing their units.

The five-star hotel has received many awards including the American Automobile Association (AAA) Five Diamond Award and Top 100 Hotels in the World - Third Best Hotel in United States from Conde Nast Traveler 2009 Reader’s Choice. RDK is proud to be part of the team that brought this award-winning mixed-use complex to Boston.
