Bermuda Waterfront at Pitts BayThe Bermuda Waterfront project began after the CBT Architects/RDK Team won a design contest and was awarded the job. After touring several existing buildings on the island, the project team quickly knew there would be many challenges in designing a new mixed-use property made up of commercial, retail, and residential space on Bermuda. Salt water and air can take their toll on mechanical systems placed outdoors, causing expensive equipment to last half as long as expected. In an effort to preserve the mechanical equipment needed and the overall aesthetic of the complex, all rooftop equipment was installed in attic space within the buildings. Circular windows on both ends of the building were also created to let air in and out. Due to the island’s shortage of fresh water and surplus of available salt water, RDK was able to design a seawater cooling system by digging wells into the ground and collecting the water to cool the facility. This helped reduce the need for city water and cut the facility’s electrical consumption by half. The use of the seawater cooling system was so successful it became a standard for future buildings in Bermuda. |
