360 Newbury Street by RDK Engineers

360 Newbury Street

The 360 Newbury Street building, originally constructed in 1920 was famously redesigned in 1987 by Frank O. Gehry, winning a Parker Award as the most beautiful new building in Boston. RDK, as part of the ADD Inc design team, was hired decades later to convert this award-winning office building into luxury loft-style condominiums. The project, however, did not come without its design challenges. With ten different configurations varying in size and layout, RDK was given the task of designing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems to accommodate the variety of configurations. In addition, each condominium featured twelve-foot-high ceilings with oversized windows allowing breathtaking views of the city. RDK was able to design an HVAC system to go up against the glass duct work that could compensate for the loss of air through the massive windows. Now home to 54 condominiums and Best Buy on the first two floors, 360 Newbury continues to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Boston inside and out.
