Williamsport Hospital Central Utility Plant

A full service medical facility, Williamsport Hospital is part of northern Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna Health System, an alliance which admits over 14,000 patients each year, and performs over 16,000 outpatient surgeries annually. Advancements in modern medicine, increasing outpatient needs, and a declining demand for inpatient services, have resulted in multiple renovation projects and facility expansion, ultimately leaving the hospital’s mission-critical Central Utility Plant obsolete. With plans to increase its size to 850,000 square feet, they needed a much larger, free-standing central utility plant. Susquehanna Health System and Siemens Building Technologies hired the LF Driscoll/Granary Associates/RDK Engineers Design Team to help.

RDK served as the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Engineer for the new Central Utility Plant, and provided design services for the design/build, fast-track project.  The new $20 million replacement Central Utility Plant has the capacity to handle the existing facility and planned expansion of the complex. The new plant provides chilled water (with winter-free cooling exchange), steam, normal and standby power with design provisions for a cogeneration unit (which was originally in the design, but permitting time prevented the final implementation), and is designed to meet the evolving mission-critical requirements of today’s 21st century health care facility.

With the myriad of life-saving equipment, operating rooms, and computerized systems in the hospital, the new Central Plant ensures that patients inside can depend on reliable, uninterrupted power.
