UMass Medical School Advanced Center for Clinical Education and ScienceRDK was honored to work on the New Advanced Education and Clinical Practice Center at the UMass Medical School. This amazing place is where many cancer patients come for their treatments and it also houses the pharmacy in which their medicines are mixed. In addition, it houses areas for radiology, MRI, Pet and CT scanning. When considering how our designs affect people, the RDK Team noticed that the infusion bays for the chemotherapy patients on the sixth floor were right in front of a very tall, scenic window. Although the view would be nice for the patients, this area would be cold for them. RDK recommended that radiant heat be used in this area in order to offset the large window and allow the patients to sit comfortably as they receive their treatments. The pharmacy was another area in which RDK needed to be innovative. It had to be designed to meet strict USP requirements. This meant keeping everything very clean, high air change rate, stringent temperatures and humidity requirements in order for life-saving drugs to be mixed safely. This pharmacy uses robotics, so the RDK Team provided services to robots that performed the mixing and compounding of the chemo medicines. Robotics were used in order to meet the high demand of chemotherapy patients. |
