
National Institute of Environmental Health SciencesThe National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is a 1.2 million square foot multi-building campus, containing chemical and biological laboratories. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) performs research activities within this building, facilitating the development of government regulations. Through a mechanical contractor, RDK Engineers was hired to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering and architectural services for a design build Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) government contract. Typical lab renovation projects within this contract included design for new lab equipment such as general fume hoods, Necropsy hoods, biological safety cabinets (BSC), centrifuges, low temperature refrigerators, and incubators. MEP systems design included significant infrastructure upgrades to the existing HVAC and gas systems. The design build approach that RDK utilized allowed the government to expedite these projects and get the work done on time and within budget. |
