North Shore Community College Health Professions & Student Services Building

Touted as the Commonwealth’s very first-state funded Zero Net Energy facility, North Shore Community College’s new Health Professions and Student Services Building is truly an example of building sustainability at its finest. “Setting the standard for future buildings of its type,” the 58,700 SF, three-story facility is targeting LEED Gold certification.  It is one of the largest buildings of its type in the country, second only to a Department of Energy building in Colorado at the time of the building's opening.

As a Zero Net Energy Building (ZNEB), it will utilize zero net energy consumption, emit zero carbon emissions, and is expected to achieve annual energy savings of $100,000 per year.

RDK Engineers provided MEP/FP/T engineering design services on the building which effectively co-locates the school’s allied health professions’ programs that include nursing, animal sciences, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and medical assistance disciplines.  Additional specialized space includes:

• general academic classroom;
• large lecture hall;
• student services center;
• veterinary classroom/labs;
• medical training classrooms;
• administration offices;
• nursing, physical and occupational therapy;
• radiology, respiratory and surgical care;
• animal sciences labs with laboratory space.

The Health Professions and Student Services Building also includes a lead lined x-ray equipment room, special acoustical treatments, energy recovery systems, enhanced envelope performance, roof-mounted photovoltaics, and high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems. The parking capacity was also increased by 140 spaces.
