Greenfield Community CollegeRDK Engineers provided MEP/FP engineering design services for the 89,000 square foot renovation, which included a new 16,000 square foot addition to the campus center and upgrades to the existing North and South buildings. Gensler served as the project architect, while Barr & Barr was the construction manager. The newly renovated LEED registered core includes an enrollment center, a multicultural center, a cafeteria, an expanded library, and administrative spaces and is currently and is targeting LEED gold certification. A geothermal system with six 1,500 foot deep standing column wells was designed and installed, with the potential for future expansion, to supplement the existing system. The project team also utilized chilled beams and radiant heating and cooling in the design to help lower operating costs for the school. An automatic fire and sprinkler system was also installed that reacts quickly when a fire is detected and can help save lives of students and employees by reducing heat and smoke. The nearly 6,000 students who attend Greenfield Community College will now have state-of-the-art facilities that will greatly improve campus life for students, faculty, and the surrounding community. "A campus center serves as the core of a college environment,” said RDK principal Bob Persechini. “This project shows Greenfield Community College’s commitment to their students, staff, and neighbors. This newly renovated center will give students an improved place to dine, study, and socialize and serve as a meeting space for facility and residents of the Greenfield community."
