Cape Cod Community College Applied Technology Building
(LEED GOLD)

Fifteen years is a long time to wait for a new building, but for Cape Cod Community College, it was well worth it. For years, the college had hopes of constructing one of the most innovative, sustainable academic buildings the Commonwealth had ever seen. Finally, funding was provided through the state’s Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM), and RDK Engineers, along with DiMella Shaffer Architects, were selected to design the facility. The result was the  Applied Technology Building, a state-of-the-art information technology building, a model of environmental sustainability, and the Commonwealth’s very first LEED Certified “Green” building. The 24,000 square foot building, one of RDK’s very first LEED projects, earned LEED Gold, and went on to receive the Massachusetts DCAM Programming Excellence Award.

The new building, in addition to providing a state-of-the-art learning facility serving more than 6,000 students per year, functions as a teaching tool for educating students on sustainability, environmental technology, and energy efficient building system design. Innovative and accessible building energy monitoring systems allow the students to observe the building’s system efficiencies in real time, empowering each to do their part in helping decrease energy costs while witnessing the power of high quality sustainable building system design in action.
