ACADEMIC WORK

University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center Child Care Center

RDK Engineers joined forces with DW Arthur Associates and Bond Brothers to create a Childcare Center at the UMass Memorial Medical Center.  The newly renovated  12,000 SF facility, which required approximately one year to build and nearly a decade to plan includes infant, toddler and preschool classrooms, an administrative area, full kitchen, staff break room, storage room, teachers’ lounge, conference rooms for parent/teacher meetings, and activity area. The childcare center is a place where medical center employees, students, and the community can receive high quality day care for their children.

As the engineer on the project, RDK provided MEP/FP services for the state-of-the-art childcare center.  Features such as radiant heating in the ceilings to heat the floors to make the children comfortable and special low-to-the-ground plumbing to make sinks and toilets easily accessible for the children were included in the design.  The use of natural light wells and open spaces for play were also incorporated into the design to create a warm and welcoming environment.

RDK Project Manager Bill Punch stated, “We are proud to be part of the team who helped bring to life the vision that the leaders at UMass had for this superb facility.  RDK is delighted to be able to partner with DW Arthur to provide not only beautiful but safe facilities for children and the people who dedicate their time caring for them.”
