Brown University Rhode Island Hall Joukowsky Institute
When Brown University decided to relocate the Artemis A.W. & Martha Sharp Joukowsky Institute for Archeology and the Ancient World to Rhode Island Hall, an 1840 historic Greek Revival building at the center of campus, they hired Anmahian Winton Architects and RDK Engineers to do the job.
As the engineer on the project, RDK was faced with the challenge of putting in all new MEP/FP systems while preserving the historic integrity of the building. While the historic shell remained intact, the interior of the building was completely gutted; all of the existing base building systems were demolished and new systems were put into place. The HVAC system was designed to utilize the university’s hot and chilled water, which was stubbed into the building. Additionally, a 24/7 HVAC system with humidity control was installed in the artifacts room. RDK’s design also included lighting and electrical service, lavatories, and fire systems all in accordance with ADA design criteria, helping to modernize the facility and bring it into compliance with code.
The building, which contains a library, offices, classrooms, lecture hall, lounge, and student research space used by students and teachers alike, was awarded LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council. |
